Billing Clerk

The primary purpose of the Billing Clerk position is to answer inbound calls from borrowers in a billing status.  This position assists with questions, account updates, and resolution of basic billing errors.
  • Answers questions that borrowers in a billing status have about their arrangement. Answer borrower calls that are sent to the Billing Clerk hunt group, or return messages from borrowers left on the voice mail for Billing Clerks.
  • Extends temporary repayment arrangements
  • Updates financial statement information that is pertinent to maintaining a billing account, including updating address, phone, employer, and reference information whenever possible
  • Identifies incomplete rehabilitation requirements and transfers the borrower to the appropriate rehab follow-up group
  • Initiates any internal procedures that are required when a borrower requests Title IV eligibility information, permanent disability claims, tax offset refunds, SCRA (active duty military) adjustments, bankruptcy claims, and any other legal request made from the borrower on debt we are collecting
  • Updates or extends bank information for automatic payment methods on accounts already in a billing status
  • Takes one-time payments from borrowers in a billing status that are not on a monthly automated payment method
  • Initiates any action that is required to resolve an error in the billing arrangement set-up that is causing the borrower unnecessary complications
  • Transfers borrower to complaint resolution personnel when they have exhausted all methods to resolve a borrower’s complaint
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned
Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Good verbal communication skills, phone skills
  • Good attendance and dependability
  • Quick adaptability to changes
  • Understanding of company computer system
  • Solid understanding of collection procedures, laws, and regulations


Physical Requirements:

  • Sit/stand/walk 8-12 hour /day
  • Lift/carry/push/pull under and over 10lbs occasionally
  • Keying frequency, handling, reaching, fine manipulation
Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma required
  • 1 – 2 years of business experience
  • Portfolio Manager experience desired

Other Requirements:
Performant is a government contractor, and has certain requirements based upon applicable regulations and client requirements.
• Ability to successfully receive clearances for client requirements (facilitated through the company).
• Must submit to and pass background check.
• Must not have any Federal or State liens resulting from County, State or Federal tax issues.
• Must not have any current defaulted student loans.
• Must be able to pass a criminal background check; must not have any felony convictions or specific misdemeanors.
• Must submit to and pass drug screen.
